SEO is a must when hoping to rank high in the SERPS

This is a quick update on my efforts on getting this blog to rank better in search engine result pages. It all started a few weeks back when I decided to do an experiment. I tried to get as many legitimate and ‘legal’ in the eyes of Google backlinks, pointing back to this site with the keyword “make money blogging”.

Although this is not a high traffic keyword, it is a keyword with a lot f competition. Many blog behemoths are ranked in the first page for make money blogging and I wanted to see, if me, a noob, can get there. I briefly made it a few months back, I stayed on the first page enough time for me to get a screen shot that you can see here: 1st page on Google

I don’t deserve a medal for it because I think it might have been due to what they call the ‘sandbox effect’.

After that brief little stay on the first pages, then my blog plummeted back to the dark depths of the SERPS. I drew out a plan, I stuck to it, I even surpassed my backlink goals, and as a result I am staging a comeback. Ideas and money is currently on SERP 2 for make money blogging. It has been there for almost one week. I am hoping that as more of the links I created get indexed I will rank higher.

Make Money Online with Duckeldanny.com

duckeldanny.com is a blog about making money online. From what I understand it is maintained by a German blogger who is doing is an excellent job channelling traffic from European search engines and other European sites to his blog. duckeldanny.com contains posts about making money blogging. It presents a great collection of strategies, affiliates and advertising networks. If you are interested in making more money blogging you should check these reviews out because this blogger does a good job. In addition to all the making money online and making money blogging tips you can find on duckeldanny.com, there is a variety of posts about different blogging and internet related subjects that make for a good read.

It is a Wordpress blog and every few posts there is at least one cool wordpress pluggin for all wordpress users to choose from. Personally, I always wanted a wordpress blog but was to busy…er…lazy to switch.

Regarding traffic, duckeldanny.com seems to have a lot of European visitors and some days over 1,500 uniques, according to the project wonderful stats which are usually a few hundred visitors off. Nevertheless, over 1,000 uniques is over 1,000 uniques and that is great.

Aside from the make money blogging tips, and the news bits that are featured regularly on this make money blog, at duckeldanny.com you will find some solid advice on other blog related topics, particularly interesting stuff for webmasters.

A post I found interesting particularly was one on the different types of Meta tags and why they are significant. It all boils down to SEO. Although I have stressed how important getting backlinks from other blogs is, what I have not talked about a lot is on site optimization. Things you can change on your blog or sie to rank better. One of the things all webmasters should consider learning is the proper use of meta tags and duckeldanny.com has a sweet post about this topic titled: Bloggers guide to meta tags.

When I started blogging a few months ago I was absolutely clueless about what I was doing. I searched for a few blogging keywords, read some A-listers posts and thought I was ready to take on the internet…lol. I think about it some times and I laugh. Well, 4 months have passed and I still don’t know much about what I am doing. I feel clueless sometimes…never helpless however. I never feel helpless because what ever the subject might be I can research, experiment and learn. Coming across a nice post, even if it is on an introductory level, might help get the hamsters walking and the brain juice flowing.

Duckeldanny.com does a good job including some informative posts on SEO that provide a solid foundation for your further SEO attempts.

SEO is not something you will learn from one day to another. Never buy into the sales pitches that claim that you will learn whatever you need to know and make money instantly by doing this and that. Like everything else, you need to put in some effort. Read, learn and implement constantly. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Start small and grow slowly. There is no fast fix that will make you successful. Success in anything does take a lot of effort and determination. Especially if you define success by how much money you make. Making money blogging or online or offline or whatever only comes when you master your process, when you invest your time and money wisely and you are not afraid losing it.

One of the things I like to do is help people get a solid foundation on knowledge and know-how. Not that I am an expert in the subject but I thing that If I can clarify one thing to someone then at least I have at least reached at some point of success. Without establishing that solid foundation you are going nowhere I appreciate blogs that include those extra few little things that will help you learn one or two things. That’s why I like duckeldanny.com. Because he is a honest blogger with goals, a methodology and presents things and information in a straight forward manner.

A good example of this is a post about setting up your affiliate online business. It is simple and straight forward and will put things in perspective if you are aiming to make money blogging.

Anyhow, I like duckeldanny.com and though I ought to let you know. It is one informative up and coming make money blog.

davidmakescents.com is a blog about money. It is a Personal Finance Blog maintained by a college student/blogger interested in making and saving money. This is not a make money online blog. It is however primarily focused on saving and managing money. The primary goal of this blogger is to increase his worth to $100,000 in the next 3 years and by the time college graduation comes. Currently it is at $24,126. This is not an easy task.

By going over and reading this blog, a few things caught my attention. In terms of content if find that davidmakescents.com is on a good track.

I particularly found the credit card section interesting. David from davidmakescents.com talks about how you can use your credit card to make money. This does sound like an oxymoron but it s possible and it is true. Credit cards are usually associated with spending money, high interest and loosing money. There is however a way to use credit cards to your advantage. According to davidmakescents.com, the process is referred to as credit card arbitrage. You won’t get rich doing this but according to the post you will be able to at least save some money if not make money. The whole process depends on you having 2 credit cards; one with dept and one with a low or 0 introductory rate. The way to do this is to transfer the high interest balance to the second one after you use the first one to write a check to yourself; take that check and put it in the bank for a year. Suggestions like these can prove to be helpful in dire times of need, but personally I wouldn’t do so due to the fact that playing around with large balances can affect your credit rating.

davidmakescents.com is a great place to learn more about credit cards, how to deal with the hidden fees as well as what you can do to save money when dealing with dept.

If it is money you want to make, the best way to start doing so is to start saving money. davidmakescents.com has included a few tips on saving money on your gasoline bill as well. Tips on doing so include, filling your gas tank on cooler times of the day, early in the morning when ground temperature is relatively lower. Doing so will allow you to get more gas for every dollar. Other tips have to do with filling up when your tank already has some gas in it minimizing the evaporation, and never buy gas when you see a truck unloading gas at the store at the same time.

Overall, this is an interesting blog. Even though it is relatively new it could grow. In terms of monetization, the methods used are Adsense and a few affiliates. It has a few backlinks, and if managed properly it could help this blogger increase his worth a bit more. To do so I would suggest selecting a total of three keywords and focusing on getting as many backlinks as possible. What I would do is to take three posts, optimize them for one keyword each and focus on getting as many backlinks as possible with that anchor text point back to those three posts. That way, over time the ranking of these posts will move up in the SERPS and the Adsense revenue could potentially increase.

Blog SEO tips for immediate ranking results

Get backlinks; and never pay for your links.

Getting links means putting in some work but it is worth the results. Get many, one way, keywords to your site follow the following tips and traffic will follow. I mean search engine traffic. After writing good content the single most important thing you can to for your blog is getting backlinks. The same applies for every kind of site. Getting backlinks should be where you dedicate most of your blogging time. I cannot stress it enough. Without backlinks your blog or site will be sitting in limbo forever and ever…and ever…till the end of time and then some.

Joking aside, it is very important. Think of backlinks as votes of confidence for your site. The more votes you have the better your pages will rank in search engine result pages. The better your ranking the more visits you will get. I dedicate a good chunk of my free time in getting as many backlinks as I can.

Let’s take things one by one.

The argument

Getting traffic to your blog and or site is not rocket science. Blogging is not rocket science. Making money blogging is not rocket science either. In order to make money with your blog, you need traffic. In order to get traffic you need to make accessing your site or blog easier for your potential visitors. There is a whole debate going on about what kind of traffic is the best kind of traffic. Search engines or social networking? Well this debate rages within the circles of social networking advocates. Anyone else, who is making or has made money online knows that the best way to do so is by driving search engine traffic to your blog. Aside from the specifics and the conversion rates and click through rates, that I don’t know much about, what makes sense is this. How many people do you thing use social networking sites? Then ask yourself, how many people do you think use search engines to find what they are looking for? I’ll let you answer that question. This post is not about debating the effectiveness of either social networking or search engines. It is just about getting backlinks.

Thinks about it like this:

Is it social networking or search engines that people use most to get around the web? When you are looking for something on the web, whether it is advice or a product or whatever, how will you go about finding it?

Under the assumption that search engine optimization will produce better long term results for your site this post will outline three ways of getting more backlinks with anchor text and therefore allow it to rank better in search engine result pages.

Comments

Once you have set up your new site you should immediately start getting a few easy backlinks. Backlinks from other high page rank sites that will allow for quick indexing. The best way of going about doing this is by visiting and commenting on blogs. Don’t comment spam, and do not use your keyword on your name. Your comments will just get turned down. I turn down those kinds of comments all the time. Read the post, and write something relevant, constructive and useful. You are getting a free backlink from this so you should at least offer some decent content for that site.

Dofollow

Some blogs are set up in a way that does not allow search engines to crawl the comments. Other ones are set up in the reverse way. It doesn’t really matter how the blogs you are commenting on are set up. All you need to worry about is getting those links. Make sure that the blogs you are commenting on have some sort of a page rank. If not, make sure they are indexed by Google. How you can do that? Well you can search the web for a page rank calculator and copy/paste the URL and figure it out. Or, you can go download seoquake for a quick overview of a site. Once you get the seoquake firefox toolbar plugin you will be able to see which blogs have PR and which don’t and therefore be able to get the best backlinks for your comments.

Remember, better PR means better links. Dofollow links are better than nofollow, however, links are links. If your site is new, and has not been indexed yet, go write a bunch of comments and indexing will follow. Ten, twenty, fifty….it is just a matter of how fast you want to get indexed.

Article Marketing

Write three articles, then go to as many article submission databases as you can and submit those articles. In order for you article not to be turned down make sure that it is over 500 words, you have a maximum of 2 links with anchor text placed in the resource box. If the particular database you are submitting to allows anchor links in text even better. For best results get as many articles submitted as possible. There is software to help you do this. Google the term free article submission software and you will find a few for sure. Get it, start writing and start submitting. Keep in mind that sometimes it takes up to 3 weeks for each article to get manually reviewed and approved by the database you submit to. Its ok…in the meantime, you should be working to get more links. Do social bookmarking.

Social Bookmarking

Find 10 social bookmarking sites. Create accounts for all of them and get to work. Submit as many links as you can for every post of yours and for every blog. Try to include a few different links, links not from the same site, to avoid getting banned for spamming. For every link you submit, in the title place the keyword you want that particular site, or post to rank well in. In the keywords, write as many keywords as you can. 10-15 should be good. For every keyword that you write the social bookmarking site gives you one more link. So think about it, if you are getting links for, lets say 10 of your posts from 10 social bookmarking sites, with ten keywords each….that’s 10 posts times 10 sites, times 10 keywords, for a grand total of 1000 anchored backlinks to your blog. Be careful, not to push it with your bookmarks. Big social bookmarking sites, are very particular with spamming and they will not give banning you a second thought. Try to fly under the radar by bookmarking other sites as well.

Directory Submission

Don’t forget the directories. Some of them have been lying around for a while and have excellent page rank. You should make a point and submit your URL in as many as you can. Its free, it just takes time.

Blogging is not rocket science. You get links, you rank better, you get traffic and you make money; it is simple.

I joined Smorty today and I have already started to blog for money. It is a blog advertising service that compensates bloggers for writing posts. I have been looking at Smorty for a while now but I only joined their today. I will be writing more about the service as I get a better idea of how it works. At a first glance the process of getting writing jobs seems relatively easy. Advertising campaigns are automatically emailed to suitable bloggers as soon as they get on the system. These jobs are picked up by bloggers on a first come first serve basis. The whole system is easy to understand and the layout is great in terms of navigation. What I enjoy the most about this system is that there aren’t many parameters you need to follow when writing and posting reviews. In terms of Entrecard, hochstadt.com is in the top of the make money online section for a while. It is one of the most popular blogs on the system and is constantly moving up. Hochstadt.com is a great source of good information and tips on how to make your internet business thrive.

I have decided to take the Adsense code off this blog. It is not that I decided against using Adsense in general just against using Adsense on this blog. For the past 3 months the code on this blog has brought in about $20…not great at all. When I started blogging, every monetization avenue seemed to be a good idea. Nevertheless, as time progressed I realized and learned many things. One of which is that Adsense does great in blogs/sites with search engine traffic. My search engine traffic is minimal and I decided that it is not enough to justify the Adsense on this site. Bad planning I guess…but good enough for a few lessons. Other blogs I started, in different niches are doing much better. They on the other hand get almost no traffic from social media, just search engines. For Ideas and Money I have decided to only keep Sponsored Reviews. Their affiliate program and the reviews make up for most of the revenue. I will be experimenting with a few other programs as well and see how it goes. Once I decide on one I will definitely write a post about it. In the meantime I would suggest keep getting backlinks and keep posting. At this point I have to say goodbye Adsense….at least for now…

A few Simple ways to help you build more backlinks

I haven’t been posting much lately. What I have been doing on my spare time is getting backlinks and lots of them. I have been literally working hard in getting as many backlinks as I can; backlinks for the home page of this blog as well as for individual posts, deep links. Backlinks are very important in achieving higher rankings in search engine result pages. For the ones interested in pursuing a similar strategy of building backlinks read on and perhaps this post will help you see things under a different light. In the past few weeks, I have managed to increase the backlinks to this blog tenfold. Here is a recent screenshot from my Webmaster Tools link report.

As you can see most of these links are for the home page… I am trying to change that.

I have been building backlinks in two different ways, by submitting articles in article databases as well as by getting many newer and older posts bookmarked in social bookmarking sites.

Let’s start with the articles.

Writing Articles

Most article databases accept articles in a standardized format. Make sure your articles are about 500 words in length, keyword rich; they have the keywords, in the title, in the beginning and in the end paragraph. Also make sure you incorporate two html links in the resource box. Even though some databases accept links in the article body, try to avoid doing so. Just so you won’t deter other webmasters from republishing them. Try to keep your links to only two, because some databases will reject articles with more links. If you are submitting one or two articles to a few databases being consistent with these parameters doesn’t really matter. Nevertheless, if you are going to do some bulk submitting this will save you loads of time.

Publishing Articles

Publishing Articles is one of the most recommended and easy ways to get links. All you need to do is to write a few articles and submit them to as many article databases possible. If you have a relatively new site or blog, the best way of going about doing it is by starting with a few established and relatively high page rank databases; databases that are crawled regularly by Google and other major search engines. At least initially, you want to avoid posting any duplicate content. So pick the 5 or 6 most popular ones and submit a different article to all of them. Sometimes articles are accepted with a bit of a delay, but you will start getting some links published within a few weeks. Don’t start submitting in bulk and in many databases in the beginning. Allow the links you have published in the established ones to get crawled by Google first. This will allow your blog-site to get indexed by Google. These are the ones I use regularly:

Once you achieve indexing you can start submitting in bulk. You can submit the same or similar article to hundreds of databases in a matter of a few hours.

Automated Software

There is a wide selection of automatic article submission software out there; they are easy to use and very effective. I use one as well. After I get a site indexed, I start submitting to hundreds of article directories, even if it is the same article, a link is a link. Even if Google might take away value form that link, it is still a link. I am not an SEO expert and I am not sure what the implications with duplicate content might be; I haven’t seen any negative aspects of publishing the same article over and over. If you are weary of such an approach avoid it and submit a different article in every database. If you are on the prow for automatic submission software, Google the term ‘Article Submitter’ along with the keyword free and you will be able to find one in the first page of results. If you are new to all this and kind broke, don’t pay, get a free one and take the time to calibrate it to your specific needs. bestjoanne.info is money blog created and maintained by Joanne from New Zealand. There are posts that date back to May 2007 so I assume that this blog has been around since. Going through and reading a few posts on this blog I was intrigued by this bloggers honesty. Joanne does admit that she is frustrated with the fact that not much money is being made. There are countless make money online blogs out there. Just search for the keywords, make money blog, or make money blogging and you will get 10’s of millions of results. The general consensus is that most of these blogs are worthless. Some are automatically made and a vast majority contain regurgitated information. Some have been created and then abandoned. I don’t disagree with this notion completely. Nevertheless, I am a firm believer that somewhere between the vast lists of search engine results lay a few blogging gems. Aside from the big boys and girls out there, the big money blogs…there are many smaller, or medium sized blogs pursuing the money keywords that are well maintained, their authors are passionate about what they are doing and they are good sources of information.

For me, a blog is a good source of information when the author(s), the bloggers do not only preach, advise and point to information but they also try out what they suggest, make sure what they tried works and then if it doesn’t they still write about it. These people will engage in experiments, try things see what works and not just write about something just because a supposed blogging guru did so. I personally like the blogs that are maintained by bloggers who try things out. I will subscribe to those blogs, learn from their successes or mistakes and compare results with what I have managed to achieve.

One of these blogs is zdiaz.com. Zidiaz.com amongst other things deals with money, money management and making money online. You can four great posts on investing in the Philippine stock market in the financial management and investments category as well as a post with Money saving tips. By doing so, this blogger is creating content that includes the money keywords that will in the end help this blog rank higher.

In terms of getting blogs rank better in searches, there have been a few things that caught my attention. Aside from focusing on the money keyword, writing about money management and providing tips on saving and investing, at zdiaz.com you can find some interesting SEO experiments. To start, I want to mention the importance of understanding Google Trends. Anyone who is interested in optimizing a site for search engines must decide on a few keywords. These keywords should not only be relating to your content but also keywords that search engine users will look for. Before you start optimizing you ought to check that there is a high volume of searches for a particular keyword or set of keywords. You can do that by using Google Trends. By creating a post that includes this video he is trying to get some traffic from search engine visitors who are looking for it. Well, the searches for this video seem to have peaked according to Google trends but still zdiaz is doing a good job in ranking his blow well for the particular keyword.

Here you can see that zdiaz.com is in moving up in the SERPS and has managed to get on the third page of the search for the keyword Charlie bit me.

By having a widely popular video like this one on your site can help drive traffic. It will not necessarily be traffic that will read your posts but will possibly generate a few dollars if they click on a few advertisements or buy something off your site.

As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I enjoy reading blogs that have information that is derived from actual experimentation, from trial and error and can give me, one more newbie blogger the opportunity to see first hand what works and what doesn’t. Zdiaz.com is one of these blogs. I will definitely keep going back for more.
